About Worm Casting
Castings are a natural fertilizer produced from worms consuming organic materials such as tree leaves, grass, and certain animal manures. The earthworms digest the materials and excrete the product known as worm casting. Worm Casting has important plant nutrients, nitrates, phosphorus, potassium, enzymes, microbes, bacteria, and trace minerals. With more nutrients than animal manure or compost, the earthworms essentially refine the compost materials. Castings absorb water in soil, and release it slowly allowing plants to absorb the nutrients efficiently. Worm Casting is pH neutral helping to control the soil acid level, while microbes and bacteria act to protect from plant disease and as a natural defense against pests.
Castings will not harm or burn plants. As they are produced naturally there are no harmful by-products, toxic ingredients, or chemical additives. Castings do not adversely affect the environment. In fact, the worm casting process helps to reduce organic waste volume, consuming a larger amount of organic materials than is produced as casting. Worm Casting does not have a strong manure or compost odour. The scent is pleasant, earthy, similar to fresh forest soil. The process is called vermicomposting. Producing pure worm casting includes a complex process of separating out the compost organic/manure materials from the casting. The worm excrement is the actual casting. Worm casting varies in colour from dark brown to black, depending on which organic materials the worms consume.
